What is an affiliate?

An affiliate is someone who makes a commission when they help to sell a product for someone else.

When you become an affiliate for a product, you get a special link to the product page. When anyone clicks your link and buys the product YOU get a percentage of the sale price.

Being an affiliate marketer is one of the easiest ways to make money online.

• you don’t need to have your own product
• you don’t even need a website, though you will be more effective if you at least have a blog

You can become an affiliate for many different things

Physical products generally generate a small commission, downloadable products tend to generate significantly more, between 50% and100%

Basic Steps of affiliate marketing

• find a hungry market, a niche where people are already buying
• find suitable products - through clickbank, paydotcom or private affiliate programs

Always mask your affiliate link - either redirect the affiliate link, or buy a domain name and redirect the domain name to the affiliate product. Then no one can substitute their link for yours and you are less likely to lose your affiliate commission.

Why be an affiliate?

It’s relatively easy to promote an already proven successful offer and earn a commission.

You don’t know everything! Why try to create a product on every facet of your niche when you can earn just as much money by promoting someone else’s really good offer? Affiliate products are a great source of passive income.

Set up a lead capture page rather than send potential buyers straight to the merchant’s page.

Research shows that it takes, on average, 7 exposures to an offer before someone actually makes a purchase. Set up an autoresponder series and give away something related to the product you are promoting to get folk on your mailing list. THEN continue to give away useful information and recommend suitable products to people on your list.

Build a list of highly targeted buyers - find products that solve problems and recommend those products.

Pop quiz time. What does “HTML” stand for? Don’t know that one? How about this - what does “FTP” stand for? OK, one more chance. Do you know how to work with either?

That brings me to the second reason why I love affiliate marketing…

** You don’t need to build a website **

What scares people more than creating a product is building a website!

• What in the world is HTML? Or FTP?
• How much does the software cost? And hosting?
• How do I upload files?
• Why isn’t it formatted correctly?
• Why don’t my graphics look like the ones the pros have?

If you are a complete beginner, it can be very difficult (even using templates) to get an attractive website in place. And hiring a professional to do it for you is out of the budget for most people.

But, with affiliate marketing, you don’t need to build a website. You simply send visitors to someone else’s professionally designed site through your affiliate link.

SIDEBAR: Just in case you’re interested, HTML stands for “hypertext markup language” and is the coding used to build webpages. FTP stands for “file transfer protocol” and is the process used for moving files from your computer to a website, or vice versa.

Affiliate marketing allows you to take advantage of the time and money invested by someone else to develop the a website. Think about it: when you promote an affiliate link, it reflects firstly upon YOU. You are the one who is advertising the link, recommending the product, sending people who have interacted with YOU to the website.

The professional site of someone else really represents you as the promoter, in the eye of those who have clicked through your link.

You get the benefits without the bother. That’s why I love affiliate marketing.
